Quick hits for Friday March 27th

Filed under: Quick Hits — admin @ 11:23 am

Here are some quick hitting takes. First off how’s your bracket’s doing? Mine you ask? Not so good. I started out good on the women’s side, nailing all but two first round games, then the wheels came off in the second round, mainly behind Rutgers thrashing of Auburn who I picked to go to the finals. On the men’s side I’ve been shakey all tourney long so no need to fear me beating out people for awards.

Anyway tonight provides some great sweet-16 matchups, North Carolina-Gonzaga is intriguing, as is the Oklahoma-Syracuse matchup. But, I am looking forward to the Michigan State-Kansas game for the simple reason that I had all Big Ten teams out by this point and Purdue and Michigan State made it further than I predicted. Purdue faultered and now it might be the Spartans turn, only time will tell.

So I read in my Sporting News e-newspaper this morning that the Clippers are looking into offering Isiah Thomas a job. Man somethings never change. The Clippers have always been bad, and from the moves there making, or getting ready to make, just seems like the “badness” with the Clippers will continue. If they’re going to get rid of Mike Dunleavy I agree with that, but to hire Isiah Thomas is asking to be set back five to 10 years depending on how long he stays. I mean past history has shown this guy might have played good, but he can’t coach or manage a team worth a rat’s donkey. He took the Pacers and ran them into the ground as a coach, and in New York, it was one bad thing after another. Isiah is the Matt Millen of the NBA.

Finally a good move by Joe Girardi as manager of the Yankees. He put Derek Jeter as the leadoff hitter, a place where he should’ve been long ago. Nothing like starting a game with the highest potential of getting a base hit. Maybe things will turn around for Girardi and the Yankees, then again they might have a long way to go.

It appears the Billy Gillispie era in Kentucky has come to an end. And the thought of Michigan football enters into my head. Yes Kentucky struggled under Gillispie, but has anyone ever heard of rebuild? But the good thing about basketball is that you can turn it around alot more wuickly than in football with the right guy. Wherever Gillispie goes, they need to have patients with him because he is a coach that rebuilds over time, not overnight.

The 49ers have figured out at least one player they won’t draft if he gets that far down the board. They brought in Matthew Stafford to visit, and the Niners brought in a psychologist and asked Stafford how he felt about his parents divorce. Apparently Stafford didn’t take to kindly to the questions, and coach Mike Singletary didn’t take too kindly to Stafford’s answer and ended up telling the press “if you’re going to pay a guy millions of dollars, and asking him about his parents divorce is going to be an issue, uhhhhh, then maybe he doesn’t belong here”. Nothing against Stafford, but I love Singletary’s straight forward-tell it like it is attitude.

Tiger Woods is near the lead in the Arnold Palmer Invite, and the heads of golf will be going to church to thank the man upstairs this Sunday, and the folks from CBS will join no doubt. And NASCAR heads into Martinsville this weekend. The smallest track on the circuit. I like Martinsville, and everytime NASCAR heads there they talk about the famous Martinsville hot dog, which gets me craving hot dogs, you’ll know what I mean when you google it.

Well have a great weekend and enjoy the sports.

Getting rid of Tony Eury Jr. is Not the solution

Filed under: nascar — admin @ 8:18 am

Getting rid of Tony Eury Jr. is not the solution for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s supposed “poor” start to 2009. We have been down this road before. For the majority of 2005, Dale Earnhardt Jr. worked without Tony Eury Jr. and it didn’t seem to help. He had 1 win in those 26 races without Tony Jr. and missed the “Chase”. Replacing Tony Jr. wouldn’t help at all, and past experiences have taught that.

People need to stop comparing him to his father, that’s what really ruined Kyle Petty. Is Dale Earnhardt Jr. the most over-rated driver in NASCAR? That’s some people’s “opinion”. And that “opinion” is based off of comparison with his dad. While he bears his fathers name there is one seperation between them, and that’s the JR. part. He’s not Dale Earnhardt, he’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. and to expect him to walk away at the end of his career with more wins and championships than his dad are unfair expectations. His popularity may have came with his name, but when his dad died, I didn’t choose him based on name alone. I became a fan because of the person he is off the track more than on the track, I feel like I can relate to him more than I could to others, that more than results on the track is why I am a fan of his.

Secondly, it isn’t even that bad of a start. One race he had a blown motor, Tony Jr. can’t control that. In Daytona, Dale Jr. missed his pit, then parked on the line, Tony Jr. can’t control those either. And since then he has gone from 35th in points to 19th after Bristol. It’s a slow climb up to the top. The thing that counts now is that he’s getting better little by little.

Over last season many of Jeff Gordon fans were calling for Steve Letarte’s head, and Hendrick and Gordon stuck by Letarte, and now look Gordon’s leading the points standings. Just because people want to get better, sometimes a knee-jerk reaction isn’t the way to go. Others have learned it in racing, and in other sports people have learned it.

My argument, stick with Tony Jr. and be patient.

March Madness is delivering

Filed under: College Basketball — admin @ 11:14 am

Well March Madness is delivering, finally. It’s been a long while since we’ve seen action and upsets like this. I didn’t get to watch the six overtime battle between UConn and Syracuse because I was busy watching my New Mexico Lobos get stunned in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament by Wyoming.

So down went Kansas, and Oklahoma, and Pittsburgh, and UConn, and Clemson, and several big time bubble teams also fell victim. UNLV, New Mexico, Northwestern, Providence, Miami-FL, and California didn’t help their cause at all, and have opened the door for other bubble teams that won yesterday like Virginia Tech, Penn State, Michigan, San Diego State, Boston College, Maryland to name a few.

This, though, is what March Madness is supposed to be like. Epic battles in the big conferences, stunners in the little conferences. Cinderella runs by .500-ball clubs. The confernce tourney’s is the heart of March Madness, all the talk all week comes down to three to four straight days on the court where it needs to be settled, it doesn’t get much better than this, and the good part is it’s only Friday in Championship Week.

Letting the smaller conferences in tourney…good for NCAA Basketball

Filed under: College Basketball — admin @ 11:50 am

People who believe you need the “best” 65 teams in the NCAA Tournament need to have their “fan-hood” taken away from them. I have heard over the last day and a half about people debating whether or not these smaller conference teams should be allowed in the tournament if all they do is get blown out in the first round. I have heard many a radio host say they would like to see the top 65 teams in the country. I say I like how it is now.

First off, to say that we need to get the best 65 teams in the tourney is ludacris. How are you going to determine who are the top 65? The AP? Ha! The AP poll is the biggest joke in the world of sports because they get sold on teams too quickly. You can’t have a year long tournament to determine the best 65, because come on there’s 343 teams in D-1, there’s no way all the teams would be able to play each other.

Second, if the NCAA would ever agree to this idea, we would have far less teams in D-1, because there will be conferences and teams who know they wouldn’t have a shot and would probably go down a division, or create the own. Which in turn would dimish the intensity that March brings. Plus, it would get to a point where you would get the same 65 in the field every year, it may take some years to get there but it will happen.

I know the stats, only four 15-seed teams have beaten a two, and no 16-seed has beaten a one. But let’s reward these teams for what they did this season. Just like in NCAA Football if you’re going to have 343 teams in a Division then treat them like they’re in the same Division. NCAA Basketball does just that right now, and if you don’t like it too bad, it’s good for the sport.
